Most offices this is a homebased position some offices have office and homebased
positions
This link takes you to the page showing the various locations of offices across Canada. I do know Ottawa West is looking for people but call NOW!! http://ww2.heartandstroke.ca/Page.asp?PageID=97#Ontario
The job below is NOT a telecommuting position BUT a HOMEBASED job....suitable for someone able to get out and go to a school for the morning or afternoon...Transportaion is needed!
Ottawa, GTA(Toronto area) and Central and Southern Ontario...BUT I just called and they are possibly looking for presenters in other areas!! Some openings in Toronto, Barrie and Guelph
Become a Presenter!
Transfer your passion for science to young people and watch their eyes widen in amazement!! Yours could be the spark that motivates and ignites that next generation.
Who are we? The Scientists in School Program brings enthusiastic scientists and educators into elementary classrooms with the ultimate aim of raising the level of scientific literacy in our society. What began as a small local program in 1989, with just 40 classrooms in Durham Region schools, has grown to become a well-recognized, popular program reaching over 11,000 classrooms. We visit schools across Durham, Toronto, York, Halton, Peel and Guelph offering 77 fun and exciting half-day, hands-on topics for Kindergarten to Grade 8 scientists. Our enthusiastic presenter group share their ideas and activities with each other and mentor new members.
Who are we looking for? To meet the continued interest in our program we are currently looking to expand our presenter roster. We are looking for individuals with post secondary education in Science, Engineering or Mathematics. We also consider backgrounds in ECE, or other post secondary education combined with a proven track record of working with children and a demonstrated “love of science”. While an honorarium is provided for classroom visits, there is a strong volunteer component to this job. Hence, volunteer experience is carefully considered.
What to expect: As a Presenter with Scientists in School you are considered self-employed. Presenters are responsible for providing schools with a half day, hands-on presentation, in elementary classrooms, on the topic to which they have been assigned. Scientists in School sends out our annual program catalogues, receives the requests from teachers, and then assigns them to our presenters. Presenters are then responsible for contacting each teacher they have been assigned to arrange an actual presentation date.
We ask presenters to indicate how busy they would like to be and try to accommodate their wishes to the best of our ability. The position is always part-time – frequently 1 to 3 days per week, but some presenters are kept busier. There is no guarantee of a certain number of presentations as it depends on booking requests. Presenters have quite a lot of flexibility in arranging their presentation schedule to fit their personal lives within the timeframe that teachers have asked for in their booking request. A car is a requirement for this position. Some travel will be required, although where possible we strive to keep people on one side or the other of the Greater Toronto area.
The hiring process for the position consists of 2 classroom visits with the Executive Director or a Team Leader, to participate as a volunteer in a “live” S in S presentation. We are looking for a “sparkle”, a certain personality who can convey their love of science to the children.
Once it is determined that you are a suitable candidate for the Presenter’s position we take a look at your particular science/math interest and expertise, your preferred grade level to work with and see whether there is a match with an existing gap in our presenter coverage of topics. When you are assigned to a topic you will be asked to job-shadow (2 to 4 visits) with an experienced presenter for that topic. A volunteer commitment is required to construct the “kit” that you will be using for your classroom workshops, however, all material expenses will be covered by Scientists in School. The kit is deemed to be the property of Scientists in School and should you leave the organization, the kit must be returned. Presenters meet as a group approximately three times a year and within their topic teams once or twice.
For each classroom presentation presenters are paid an honorarium. They are also able to claim mileage for travel to distant schools.
If this sounds like something you would be interested in you are asked to submit a resume and cover letter outlining your science background, experience working with children and other volunteer experience. This can be done electronically to inquiries@scientistsinschool.ca, attention Carolyn Edison, Team Leader or by mail to:
Scientists in School92 Church St S., Suite 103Ajax, ON, L1S 6B4
For more information, please don't hesitate to call us at 905-426-3434.
I was told when I called that the honorarium is 95.00$ each presentation, each presentaion is about 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hrs long..there is prep time involved!! One presentation per 1/2 day( morning or afternoon) so the most presentations a day would be 2. This job is NOT a telecommuting position but a HOMEBASED job.
